Grok Bot for finance: bots that prepare the work, people who sign it

For CFOs, controllers, FP&A teams, accountants and finance operations professionals

Everything for Finance teams

Set up Grok Bot with the least access that works. Then build and test bots for close status, reporting intake, variance commentary and AP triage that prepare drafts with evidence for you to review and release.

What you’ll be able to do

By the end, you can…

Pick the right tool for the jobDecide whether a piece of standing work suits Grok Bot, a Custom Agent in the Grok chat app or a bot built on the Grok API. Then check your plan on x.ai/pricing. As of 28 October 2026, Premium, Super, Ultra and Teams seats include Grok Bot. Free and the $8 Plus tier do not.
Set it up with the least access that worksConnect apps read-only and switch off send, post, delete and payment tools you don't need. Add Ask first rules for any write, vendor email or purchase, set Execution on this computer to Never allow, and save no cards in Vault.
Write instructions a Bot can follow every cycleWrite a setup message that gives the Bot one job, its sources, who decides, what it may do without asking, what needs approval every time and what it must never do. It also tells the Bot to stop and say what's missing rather than guess or reuse old data.
Run four tested finance routinesBuild and schedule a close-status tracker, a reporting-input intake log, variance commentary drafts that keep measured variances apart from unconfirmed explanations, and AP inbox triage that stops when bank details change.
Share a Team Bot without losing track of accessShare a Bot with your finance team at the right access level and connect it to Slack. You'll be able to explain whose accounts and whose usage each reply draws on.
Review the work before you sign anythingRead run history and approval cards, follow evidence links, check what the Bot reports it couldn't verify, and check its memory against the live source. When the cycle is done, clean up files and sign-ins.

How it works

A tutor that meets you where you are

  1. Lessons that adapt to your levelEach of the 27 lessons is a hands-on tutorial you follow with Grok Bot open. The lesson adjusts to you: more background if agent apps are new to you, less if you already run routines.
  2. An AI tutor you can ask anythingType or speak your question, for example how to word an Ask first rule for your ERP, or why a routine didn't run. The tutor answers in the context of the lesson you're on.
  3. Quizzes and flashcards for each lessonShort quizzes and flashcards tied to each lesson check the settings, rules and review steps that matter most, such as what never to connect and why separate Bots aren't a security boundary.
  4. Progress tracking and a certificateYour progress is tracked across all eight modules. You get a certificate of completion when you finish.

Curriculum

The curriculum

The course runs in eight modules. It starts with whether Grok Bot fits your work and how to set it up safely, then moves to writing instructions, routines and four finance bot tutorials, and ends with sharing and review. Every lesson has steps, copy-paste prompts, a checkpoint and what to do when the result isn't right.

Module 1Is Grok Bot Right for This Work?3 lessons

  1. 1Grok Bot, Custom Agents and API Bots: Three Different Things
    • Describe what a Bot, a skill, a routine and a Page are in Grok Bot
    • Distinguish Grok Bot from a Custom Agent and from an API-built bot by actions, scheduling, setup and billing
    • Choose the right one of the three for a described piece of finance work
  2. 2Plans, Platforms and Beta Status as of 28 October 2026
    • Check whether a given plan includes Grok Bot on x.ai/pricing
    • Name which features need the desktop app
    • Explain how routine runs and Bot replies draw on the weekly usage pool
  3. 3Does This Standing Work Suit a Bot? Drawing the Delegation Map
    • Classify close, intake, variance and AP tasks as read-and-draft, approve-each-time or never
    • Write a one-page delegation map that names an owner for each Bot and each exception
    • Spot work that is out of scope for a Bot, such as paying, posting journals or filing

Who it’s for

Made for you if…

Made for: CFOs, controllers, FP&A teams, accountants and finance operations professionals

Controllers and accountants who run the month-end close

You want a close-status view and an intake log that rejects incomplete or duplicate files, with no change to the checklist or the ledger and a clear owner for every exception.

FP&A analysts who write variance commentary

You want first drafts above a materiality line that keep measured variances apart from possible explanations, with each explanation marked as needing confirmation and totals you recompute yourself.

Finance operations and AP staff

You want invoices sorted and matched to POs, and anything with changed bank details or an unusual sender stopped and flagged, while the Bot never pays, approves or replies.

CFOs evaluating Grok Bot for a small team, or already holding seats

You need to know what the plans include, which settings close the obvious control gaps, and how to share a Team Bot so a named person still reviews and releases the work.

Questions

Good to know

Which plans include Grok Bot?

As of 28 October 2026, new customers get Grok Bot with Premium, Super or Ultra, as individual plans or Teams seats. An admin enables it on Enterprise. Free and the $8 Plus tier do not include it. Some legacy Cursor and linked SuperGrok routes still work for existing customers. Plans and prices have changed several times since launch, so check x.ai/pricing before you start.

Do I need a desktop computer?

Yes. You can message Bots and approve actions from a phone, but teaching a task by demonstration and testing routines only work in the desktop app. The desktop app runs on macOS, Windows and Linux.

Will the bots pay invoices, post journals or file anything?

No. This course does not teach letting a Bot pay, approve reimbursements, post journals, move cash, or file with tax or banking portals. The bots read approved sources and prepare drafts, logs and exception lists. A named finance owner reviews them before anything is released.

Can I practise without putting work data into Grok Bot?

Yes. Before you use work data, you need written approval from your organization. Without it, practise on anonymized sample files. The course also covers what never to connect or store: bank, payroll and tax portals, admin accounts, saved cards, personal and work accounts mixed together, and regulated or nonpublic data without written approval.

Does running routines cost extra?

Every Bot reply and every routine run draws on your plan's weekly usage pool, and frequent schedules or busy Slack triggers can use it up quickly. Once the pool runs out you can pay for more with prepaid additional usage credits. The course shows how to keep routines within limits.

Is Grok Bot still in beta?

As of 28 October 2026, the launch post still calls it beta. The x.ai/bot FAQ says it is generally available for Enterprise and Teams, and Team Bots are in public beta. Menu names have changed between versions, so the lessons say where your screen may look different.

Will I build bots on the Grok API or set up Custom Agents in the Grok chat app?

No. The course compares both with Grok Bot so you can choose the right one, but it doesn't teach coding API bots for Slack, Discord or Telegram, or the detailed setup of Custom Agents.

What should I know before I start?

You should know the month-end close, reconciliations and budget-versus-actuals variance analysis. You'll also need a spreadsheet tool to recompute material totals yourself. You don't need any experience with agent apps.
