What Manus Is in October 2026
An agent does the work; a chat assistant answers
It's day three of the close. Revenue beat budget, but gross margin fell, and you need a variance table with commentary by morning.
If you ask a chat assistant (a tool that replies to messages in a chat window) why margin fell, it gives you a paragraph. You still build the table, trace the figures and write the file yourself.
Manus describes itself as an autonomous agent: software that plans a multi-step job, carries out each step and delivers finished work. Give it your actuals and budget exports and it can:
- plan the steps (load files, compute variances, flag lines over your threshold)
- run the calculations
- build an Excel workbook with charts, a short document or a .pptx deck
- hand you the files
That changes your job. You stop typing questions and start reviewing deliverables, the way a senior reviews a first-year's working papers. The agent can do the preparing. You decide whether anything is fit to use.
Chat assistant
- Replies with text in a chat window
- You build the table and files yourself
- One question, one answer
- Its explanation can sound right without being traced
Autonomous agent (Manus)
- Plans the job in steps, then carries them out
- Runs code and builds .xlsx, .pptx or document files
- Works through many steps on one task
- Still needs you to recompute and tie out
With an agent, your effort goes into reviewing the deliverable, not producing it.
Try it
You need a variance table, a chart and a two-page commentary file from two CSV exports. Which tool type is built to plan and produce all three as files?
Where the work happens: the cloud sandbox
Each Manus task runs in its own sandbox: a cloud virtual machine (a computer that runs on Manus's servers, not your laptop). Manus says each sandbox has:
- a browser for web research
- a file system that holds your uploads and the files it creates
- code execution, so it can install software and run scripts, for example to calculate variances from a CSV
Manus also lists built-in data sources it can use without API keys, including financial data and SEC filings.
Two things follow for finance work.
First, anything you upload leaves your network and sits on a cloud machine. Lesson 3 covers what must never go there, such as credentials, payroll and nonpublic results on unapproved plans.
Second, the sandbox records what Manus did. You can watch or replay a session to see which pages it opened and which code it ran. That's your audit trail when you check its work later.
Every stage happens on a cloud machine, and the session can be replayed afterwards.

Where does Manus actually run the code that computes your variances?
Who owns Manus now, and how to spot stale material
Manus's ownership changed twice in 2026. You need the current picture because vendor approval forms and risk reviews ask who runs the tool.
- December 2025: Meta announced it was buying Manus.
- April 27, 2026: China's National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) prohibited the deal and ordered it withdrawn.
- August 11, 2026: Manus announced the separation and notified users about data deletion.
- September 1, 2026: Manus said it had formally resumed independent operations under its founding team.
As of October 28, 2026, Meta does not own or run Manus. If an article, a training deck or your own IT team's notes call it "Meta's Manus" or "part of Meta," they're out of date. Some localized Manus pages still say this too, so don't treat a Manus page as current just because Manus published it. Check the date and the Manus blog.
The developer is Butterfly Effect Pte. Ltd., a Singapore company, and Manus is headquartered in Singapore.

Your IT risk register, dated March 2026, lists the vendor as "Manus (Meta Platforms)." What should you do?
Manus 2.0 and its three modes
Manus 2.0 shipped on September 28, 2026. It brought a new desktop workspace (Manus Studio), event-triggered Automations and other changes. So screens and menu names in guides from before September 2026 may not match what you see. This course names a menu only where Manus's own documentation confirms it. Otherwise it describes the step in general terms.
Manus 2.0 offers three modes:
- Manus 2.0 Lite: for quick work. On the Free plan, daily credits can be used only on Lite (more in the next lesson).
- Manus 2.0: the standard mode between the other two. Manus's documentation that we could check doesn't describe it in more detail.
- Manus 2.0 Max: for hard reasoning or creative work.
There's also a Chat mode for simple questions, which uses fewer credits.
Where the mode picker sits on screen isn't documented, so look for it near the task box. A finance example: use Lite to reformat a list of cost centers, and Max for a variance bridge that has to reconcile mix, price and volume.
Tap one on the left, then what it goes with on the right.

A colleague's March 2026 guide tells you to click a menu you can't find. What's the most likely reason?
Never let Manus be your only archive
In August 2026, as part of the separation from Meta, Manus changed service for users in "specific jurisdictions" that it did not name. Affected users lost data created on or after December 29, 2025, and some account types were deleted outright and had to sign up again. Those regions lost access between August 23 and 25, 2026. Manus offered a backup tool and a restoration portal, but the notice period was short.
There's a second reason. A sleeping sandbox is recycled after 7 days on Free or 21 days on Pro. Final files are restored, but intermediate working files are not.
For finance, the rule is simple: every deliverable and every source file lives in your own controlled storage, in the same place you keep the working papers for the close. Download the workbook with formulas, the deck and the source table the day you get them, and file them with the period and version in the name, for example 2026-09_Variance_v1_ManusDraft.xlsx. If a reviewer or auditor asks how a figure was built next quarter, you need to be able to answer without Manus.

Give one reason, based on 2026 events, why Manus should never be your only copy of a deliverable.
Is Manus offered where you are?
Manus publishes no list of supported or unsupported countries. Its help center has no availability page. What is known, as of October 28, 2026:
- Access from mainland China has been blocked since mid-2025, and no official source says it has resumed.
- New sales paused in the unnamed jurisdictions affected in August 2026, and Manus hasn't said whether they've resumed.
- Prices are set in US dollars, and your bank converts them.
- You must be 18 or older.
Hands-on. Open https://manus.im and start sign-up with Google, Apple or Microsoft, or with email (email sign-up requires phone verification). Confirm that you can create an account and that sign-up isn't blocked or paused for your location. If it is, stop there.
Don't use VPNs, foreign addresses or borrowed accounts to get around a regional limit. Beyond the terms of service, a finance team can't defend confidential data running through an account it isn't entitled to hold. Raise it with whoever approves your tools instead.
Flip each card. Each answer is as of October 28, 2026.

Sign-up shows that Manus isn't available in your country. What's the right next step?
Its output is a first draft
When a conversation touches health, finances or legal rights, Manus shows a "High-impact topic" notice. The notice is informational only and doesn't limit what Manus does. Manus asks users to verify important details with authoritative sources and to treat its output as a starting point. It also acknowledges that it can give confident but wrong answers.
Richard Jackson, EY's global AI assurance leader at the time of recording, suggested treating an AI tool as a "first-year equivalent." The profession already knows how to handle a first-year's work: a senior does a detailed review, then a manager does a general review.
In practice, suppose Manus returns a polished commentary saying margin fell "because of freight costs." Your bridge shows the measured movement is mix, with more of the costlier premium line. Freight is Commercial's explanation, and Operations disputes it. So freight stays a hypothesis in a separate column until someone produces evidence. You recompute the totals, check the period, currency and units, and sign only what ties out. Later lessons teach that checking routine step by step.
In short
Manus is an autonomous agent. Instead of just answering, it plans a multi-step job, carries it out in a cloud sandbox with a browser, a file system and code execution, and delivers finished files such as workbooks, documents and .pptx decks. It has run independently of Meta since September 1, 2026, after China's NDRC ordered the Meta deal withdrawn on April 27, 2026, so any material calling it "Meta's Manus" is stale. Manus 2.0 (September 28, 2026) offers three modes, Lite, 2.0 and Max, and screens from before that date may differ. Because some accounts in unnamed jurisdictions lost data or were deleted in August 2026, and sandboxes are recycled, you keep every deliverable and source file in your own storage. You also confirm at sign-up that Manus is offered where you are, and never look for a way around regional limits. On finance topics Manus shows a "High-impact topic" notice, and its output is a first draft you check and tie out before anyone relies on it. Next lesson: plans, credits and what a task costs.
